Inaugural Ellen C. Burt Symposium Education, Environment, and Economic Vitality: May 6th-7th, 2003
Eben Holden Conference Center, St. Lawrence University, Canton, NY
"Going Local: Capitalizing on our Resources in St. Lawrence County"
The topic of the 2003 Symposium was Going Local: Capitalizing on our Resources in St. Lawrence County. Michael Shuman, author of "Going Local: Creating Self-Reliant Communities in a Global Age", was the keynote speaker and helped participants discover the importance of mapping local assets (economic, environmental, social, educational, etc.) as an important step in creating viable plans for sustained economic development and quality of life in the county. We invited stakeholders from a variety of constituencies to participate -- government officials, economic developers, educators, planners, environmentalists, people working in business and agriculture, invited students (high school and college-level) and others interested in these topics. The participants had to attend for both days, where they joined forces on "action/research teams" to plan new action and research initiatives in the county.
