Michael Shuman Unveils “St. Lawrence County Model” Across the Nation

September, 2003. Since his work with the Burt Symposium in May, Michael Shuman, the keynote and consultant at the Symposium, has described the “St. Lawrence County Model” for local economic development in talks and workshops given in Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and Maine. Shuman has described the model as a highly comprehensive approach to tackling economic problems at the local level. The “model” involves the creation of action/research teams to identify local assets, economic indicators, leakages to the flow of capital, and projects to stem the leaks. First Annual Burt Symposium

The Annual Symposium is named for Ellen C. Burt, who with her family gifted her alma mater, St. Lawrence University, with an endowment to enhance education, environment, and economic vitality in New York’s North Country region.

Task Force Team Discusses
Assets in the Region

The theme of the first Symposium was “Going Local: Capitalizing on our Resources in St. Lawrence County.” At the Symposium over 150 stakeholders from local businesses and industries, financial institutions, government agencies, schools, and colleges participated in developing a comprehensive approach to enhancing local economic development. The concept was introduced by keynote speaker Michael Shuman, author of “Going Local: Creating Self-Reliant Communities in a Global Age” in a paper written specifically for St. Lawrence County. Participants then worked in action/research teams to develop the concept into a model to be used over the coming years. More…

7th Annual North Country Symposium: "Opportunities for Sustainable Growth in This Economy"

On April 1st and 2nd 150 community leaders and activists met to discuss and share ideas to meet economic development challenges that face St. Lawrence County and surrounding communities.

Over 30 college and high school students were able to attend the Wednesday evening session. Symposium staff and keynote speaker Jeff Yost also met with a small number of college students to hear their hopes and dreams for staying in the region, or returning in the future.
Mobilize, Take Action, Stay the Course!

Comparing our current financial crisis to the 1998 Ice Storm, County Administrator Karen St. Hilaire urged the audience to draw upon our
sense of community to assess our needs, mobilize our resources, act, persevere, and take preventative steps against the effects of another crisis.

Keynote Speaker Jeff Yost

On Thursday, Jeff Yost, CEO of the Nebraska Community Foundation, told the symposium to build upon past accomplishments and regional assets to take its efforts to another level through leadership,

and focus on North Country youth. Thursday evening he suggested to the North Country Symposium Steering Committee that creating a community foundation in St. Lawrence County and seeking out “growth” entrepreneurs would be logical next steps.

Action Research Teams

On Thursday afternoon the Symposium’s 8 action-research teams met to discuss goals and projects for the coming year. The Health Team discusses ways to address the shortage of skilled medical staff in the region.
